Contexte
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the UN Migration Agency. With 175 member states, it is committed to the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits migrants and society. Established in 1951 and now active in over 400 field locations worldwide, IOM works with partners, governments, and civil society to assist in meeting operational challenges, advance understanding, encourage development, and uphold human dignity.
Over the past years, IOM has worked closely with national and local authorities across sub-Saharan Africa to address displacement, support evacuation, provide humanitarian assistance, manage sites, and promote durable solutions. IOM supports the mainstreaming of migration into disaster preparedness, response, risk reduction, and climate change adaptation.
In May 2023, IOM and the Directorate-General for International Partnerships (DG INTPA) of the European Commission initiated discussions for the “Regional Responses to Climate Displacement in Sub-Saharan Africa” programme (RE2CLID). The programme enhances resilience, self-reliance, and protection of Displacement-Affected Communities (DACs) across two clusters: Cluster 1 (Lake Tanganyika Basin: Burundi, DRC, Tanzania) and Cluster 2 (Southern Africa and South-West Indian Ocean: Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros).
The action focuses on three main objectives: strengthening systems to avert/minimize/address displacement, improving natural resources and agricultural land governance, and helping displaced populations attain climate-resilient durable solutions and social cohesion.
