Contexte

The Tarbell Fellowship 2027 is a one-year journalism fellowship for talented journalists and emerging reporters interested in covering artificial intelligence and its growing impact on society. The programme, organised by the Tarbell Center for AI Journalism, combines intensive training, a newsroom placement and professional development opportunities designed to help fellows build careers in AI journalism.

The fellowship is particularly relevant to applicants who are passionate about journalism, have a strong interest in artificial intelligence and can produce compelling, accurate and timely reporting. Candidates do not necessarily need previous professional newsroom experience or a university degree, making the programme accessible to talented journalists from diverse backgrounds.

Missions et responsabilités

• Covering artificial intelligence and its growing impact on society.
• Participating in a nine-month placement at a major newsroom (such as Bloomberg, The Guardian, MIT Technology Review, TIME, NPR, The Verge and other prominent media outlets).
• Completing a 10-week AI Journalism Fundamentals course delivered remotely.
• Participating in a weeklong Fellowship Summit in the San Francisco Bay Area.
• Producing compelling, accurate and timely reporting, identifying important stories, communicating complex subjects clearly and producing high-quality work under tight deadlines.

Profil recherché

• Rising journalism talent from around the world with a strong commitment to journalism.
• Interest in understanding and reporting on artificial intelligence and its effects on society.
• Previous newsroom experience, including experience with student newspapers, is desirable but not mandatory.
• Backgrounds may come from journalism, technology, artificial intelligence, machine learning, AI governance or related fields.
• Strong writing ability is essential, capable of identifying important stories, communicating complex subjects clearly and producing high-quality work under tight deadlines.
• Self-motivated, persistent, open-minded and willing to pursue difficult stories.
• No age limit, and a university degree is not required.
• International applicants are welcome (some placements may require relocation and the legal right to work in the United States or United Kingdom).

Conditions et avantages

• Successful fellows receive a fully supported pathway into AI journalism, including a nine-month placement at a major newsroom.
• Stipend of approximately US$60,000 to US$80,000, depending on the location of the placement.
• Candidates with more than five years of full-time experience in journalism or AI may qualify for Senior Fellowship positions, providing stipends of approximately US$90,000 to US$110,000, depending on location.
• 10-week AI Journalism Fundamentals course delivered remotely with structured curriculum, guest lectures, assignments and practical preparation.
• Weeklong Fellowship Summit in the San Francisco Bay Area (travel and accommodation costs covered by Tarbell).
• Visa support arrangements by Tarbell in some cases.
