Contexte

La Nueva Fábrica (LNF), a nonprofit contemporary art space in Antigua, Guatemala, has opened applications for its 2027–2028 Residency Programme, inviting artists, curators and cultural practitioners from Guatemala and around the world to apply. The international residency is designed as a space for research, reflection, experimentation, critical dialogue and engagement with local communities. Unlike production-focused artist residencies, the LNF programme does not require participants to produce a final artwork. The 2027–2028 residency cycle will select five residents through the international open call. Successful applicants will undertake residencies lasting between four and eight weeks, with dates coordinated with the LNF team between September 2027 and June 2028.

About the La Nueva Fábrica Residency: La Nueva Fábrica is a contemporary art space located in Antigua, Guatemala, operating from a former textile factory. Founded in 2013, the organisation works across exhibitions, public programmes, residencies and education. Its residency programme is at the centre of LNF’s activities and welcomes both emerging and established practitioners. The programme provides participants with an environment to develop ideas, conduct research and exchange knowledge with other artists, cultural practitioners and members of the local community. The residency is particularly suited to applicants who want to explore their practice through research and contextual engagement rather than simply producing a finished artistic work.

Residency Details: The 2027–2028 residency programme offers flexibility in both timing and practice. Key details include Location: Antigua, Guatemala; Residency period: Between 1 September 2027 and 30 June 2028; Duration: Four to eight weeks; Residents selected: Five; Application: International open call; Eligible disciplines: All artistic mediums; Career stage: Emerging and established practitioners; Applicants: Individuals aged 18 and above; Duos: Two people may apply together; Applicants with children: Welcome to apply. Research-Based Rather Than Production-Driven: One of the defining features of the programme is its research-based approach. Residents are not required to produce a final artwork during their stay. Instead, the residency provides space for practitioners to reflect on their work, undertake research, develop ideas and establish connections. The programme encourages residents to engage with the context of Antigua and participate where appropriate in LNF’s public activities. Residents are encouraged to contribute to public programmes, open studios and community events, creating opportunities for interaction between visiting practitioners and local audiences. This approach makes the residency relevant to practitioners whose projects involve research, cultural exchange, community engagement, experimentation or critical inquiry.

Residency Experience in Antigua, Guatemala: Antigua provides the geographical and cultural setting for the programme. LNF’s location in a former textile factory also forms part of the organisation’s identity and its approach to contemporary art and community engagement. The residency offers participants an opportunity to work within a context that brings together contemporary artistic practice, research, cultural exchange and local engagement. Residents can use the period to develop research, explore new ideas, connect with communities and other practitioners, and reflect on their ongoing practice. The programme is open to applicants working across artistic mediums, making it suitable for a wide range of contemporary creative and cultural practices.
